Kathmandu, 19 November (HS). Nepal Police has arrested 14 Indian youths for online betting from Nepal’s border district adjoining Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. Most of the youth arrested are from Gorakhpur and surrounding areas. Police have arrested these youth while renting a two-storey house and doing online betting from there.
Nepal Police raided a house in Bhairahawa after receiving information about illegal activity and took 14 youth under control there. Policemen under the command of DSP Naveen Paudel of Bhairahawa Police raided the house of local Ashfaq Ansari and also recovered mobile phone, laptop, SIM card, computer hard disk etc. from there. Paudel told a press conference on Tuesday that information was being received about suspicious activity at Ansari’s house for the last few months.
In the press conference, DSP Paudel said that 40 mobile phones used for betting, 3 laptops of different companies, 2 routers and more than 50 unused SIM cards have been recovered. All of them have been found doing online betting in sports like cricket, football, hockey etc. Police suspect that they were preparing to place betting on the games of the first season of Nepal Premier League, which is going to start in Nepal from next week. Apart from famous players like Shikhar Dhawan of India, players from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, England, Australia and New Zealand are also participating in this NPL.
Among the people arrested by the police in Bhairahawa on the charges of online betting are 33-year-old Sahil Soda, resident of Panchkula, Haryana, 18-year-old Shyam Gupta of Jwalapur, Uttarakhand, 20-year-old Ravi Jaiswal of Deoria district Gauribazar, Uttar Pradesh, 24-year-old Anurag of Faridabad, Haryana. Singh, 19-year-old Nitesh Verma of the same place, 21-year-old Deepak Jaiswal of Gorakhpur district, 22 year old Rajat Kumar from Gorakhpur is also included.
Similarly, 18 year old Lucky Jaiswal of Gorakhpur, 21 year old Satendra Kumar of Sant Kabirnagar, 25 year old Awadhesh Kumar of the same place, 18 year old Mohit Kumar, 20 year old Priyanshu Jaiswal of Gorakhpur Cantt police station, 19 year old Manish Paswan of the same place and R Azamgarh. Shivam Singh, 25, has been arrested. DSP Paudel said that all of them were produced in the district court on Tuesday and are being interrogated on police remand for 5 days.
