The Maharashtra government has now reached the Supreme Court in the 2006 Mumbai serial train blast case. Hearing will be held on July 24 in the apex court. On behalf of the Maharashtra government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appealed to the Supreme Court for immediate hearing.

On July 21, all the 12 accused were acquitted by the Bombay High Court in the 2006 serial train blast case in Mumbai. The court said that the prosecution, that is, government lawyers failed to prove the case against the accused.

The High Court said that it is difficult to assume that the accused have committed the crime, so they are acquitted. If they are not wanted in any other case, they should be released from jail immediately.

Following the court order, two of the 12 accused were released from Nagpur Central Jail on Monday evening. These include Ehtesham Siddiqui, who was sentenced to death in the case by a lower court in 2015.

The second accused, Mohammad Ali, was serving a sentence of life imprisonment. An official said that Naveed Khan, one of the 12 people, will still remain in Nagpur jail, as he is a prisoner under consideration in a case of attempt to murder.

189 people were killed in the serial blast
On 11 July 2006, there were a series of explosions in seven coaches of Mumbai’s Western Sub Urban trains. In this, 189 passengers were killed and 824 people were injured. All the blasts took place in first class coaches. The decision has come 19 years after the incident.
