Gaza/Jerusalem, October 17 (IANS). At least 28 Palestinians were killed and 160 others were wounded in an Israeli airstrike on Thursday on a school housing displaced people in the Jabaliya camp in the northern Gaza Strip, the media office of the Hamas-run Gaza government said.

The bombing caused a fire in the tents of displaced persons on the school premises. According to the Palestinian official news agency WAFA, some casualties were transferred to a hospital in northern Gaza, while ambulance teams were unable to reach people at the school.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that the Israeli Air Force carried out a “precision strike” on an operational meeting point for Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants in northern Gaza.

The IDF said the militants were operating inside a command and control center inside a compound that previously served as the Abu Hassan School.

Dozens of militants were present in the compound at the time of the attack, the IDF said, which also published the names of 12 people present.

It was claimed that the terrorists were involved in planning and carrying out rocket attacks into Israeli territory in recent days, as well as attacks against IDF troops and Israel.

Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for civil defense in Gaza, said in a statement on Thursday that Israeli forces were “systematically destroying” the Jabaliya camp, using all means, including explosive robots, to clear the camp.

Medics told Xinhua news agency that eight people were killed and dozens of others injured in an Israeli bombardment of a house belonging to the al-Helou family west of Gaza City, while the Civil Defense Authority in Gaza said in a press statement on Thursday that His team recovered the bodies of six Palestinians killed in a bombing in the town of al-Fakhari, east of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza.
