IAS Ashok Khemka is retiring today

Senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Ashok Khemka, who is known for his reputation and unusually large number of transfers as an honest bureaucrat, is retiring on Wednesday after spending nearly 34 years in the Haryana government. 1991 batch officials, who were last posted as Additional Chief Secretary in the Transport Department, have held 57 different positions in their career. Khemka became famous in 2012 when he canceled the filing of Gurugram land transactions associated with Robert Vadra, son -in -law of senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, as Director General of Land Consolidation and Land Records. The move received praise from anti -corruption activists, but also led to political reaction and transferred which became a pattern for the rest of his service.

On an average, transferred every six months

In his three -decade long career, Khemka has been transferred once every six months. Many of his appointments have been made in departments that are considered low-profile or insignificant, including four term in the State Archives Department, three of which were under the BJP-led government in Haryana. Manohar Lal Khattar returned to the Transport Department in December 2024, about 10 years after the government was suddenly removed from the same department during the first term of the government. At that time, he served only four months before being shunted out.

The letter was written to Manohar Lal Khattar

In 2023, Khemka once again made headlines when he wrote a letter to the then Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to lead the vigilance department in the final attempt to “eliminate corruption”. In his letter written on 23 January 2023, he wrote, “At the last stop of my service career, I offer to serve my services to lead the Vigilance Department. If I get an opportunity, I assure you that I will assure you that there will be a real war against corruption and no matter how big and powerful it is, it will not be spared.” He also criticized “unbalanced distribution of work” in the bureaucracy, stating that while some officers are burdened with many departments, there are many other officers who do not have work. For this, he gave his own example.
