The Election Commission has taken an important step before the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar. As part of the campaign to repair the voter list, the process of removing the names of about 35 lakh voters has started so far. This decision has been taken at a time when the political atmosphere in the state is hot and all the parties are engaged in electoral strategy.

The main reason for this change is that many voters are no longer alive, some have permanently gone out of Bihar, and some are recorded in the voter list more than once. To correct these mistakes, the Election Commission has launched a campaign called SIR (Special Intensive Revision).

  • Who will be removed from the voter list? Statistics are revealing themselves
  • According to the data, a total of 12.5 lakh dead people are named as voters in the voter list, they have been identified.
  • If the total number of such names is seen, it is about 1.59% of the total voters.
  • 17.5 lakh people permanently out of Bihar. There is no eligible vote here.
  • The names of 5.5 lakh voters were registered twice in the list.
  • A total of 35.5 lakh names will be removed under this entire process, which is more than 4.5% of the total voters. This is considered a major change, especially so close to the election.
  • Foreign nationals were also included in the voter list, now being removed
  • Investigations by the Election Commission also found that some foreign nationals, who came from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar, were mistakenly joined the voter list. This is not only a serious matter from security point of view, but also questions the transparency of elections.
  • Now the Commission has directed to remove all these foreign names from the voter list. This step has been taken to ensure that only valid Indian citizens can vote in Bihar elections.

Voter list is being investigated strictly through SIR

The Election Commission clearly states that they want the voter list to be 100% pure before the 2025 assembly elections. Their aim is to completely curb fake voting and strengthen the foundation of democracy.

Opposition raised the question, anticipated impact on election results

Opposition’s concerns about this entire process are also no less. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav had already reacted to the issue. He said that if the names of 1% of the voters are removed from every assembly constituency, then an average of 3,200 names can disappear in each region. But now that this percentage has gone above 5%, the concern has increased even more.

Tejashwi Yadav and other opposition leaders say that this voter delition process may affect the results of the election. They are demanding that the Election Commission take transparency and all removed names should be reviewed in public.

Last date for submission of form, July 25, then first draft will be released

So far, 6.6 crore voters have submitted their forms, which is 88.18% of the total voters. Voters can submit their form by 25 July 2025. Subsequently, the first draft of the voter list will be released by the Election Commission, which will be opened for the suggestions and objections of the general public.

Will this initiative strengthen democracy or give rise to political debate?

On the one hand, the Election Commission is calling this entire exercise necessary to maintain the purity and transparency of the election, on the other hand, the opposition is calling it a political move. The question is also arising whether this process is being implemented in an impartial manner or whether it is trying to provide electoral benefits to certain classes.
