4X4 ICE SUV to be launched in India

In the SUV segment, many new 4X4 ICE models from Renault, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen will be launched in the Indian market.

Currently the options for capable 4X4 models within the Indian automobile market are limited. However, many major manufacturers are planning to launch new 4X4/AWD SUVs in the country. These SUVs have the go-anywhere capability and are the first choice for adventure seekers. In this article we will take a look at the upcoming 4X4 SUVs in India.

1. New Generation Renault Duster

The third generation of Renault Duster is scheduled to be launched in India in the second half of 2025. The first generation model came with AWD (all-wheel-drive) option in the domestic market and the upcoming new model is likely to have the same option. The SUV was unveiled globally last year and is already on sale in the European market.

The upcoming Renault SUV based on the CMF-B platform will get a 130 bhp turbo petrol mild hybrid engine and there is also likely to be a strong hybrid powertrain option for the India-spec model. In terms of dimensions, the 4X4 SUV will be 4.34 meters long with 209 mm ground clearance.

2. New Nissan SUV

The new generation Renault Duster will give birth to a Nissan counterpart in the Indian market. Based on the familiar CMF-B platform, the SUV will share powertrains and key mechanical components with the Duster. This means that an AWD option is highly likely for the Duster-based Nissan SUV.

It is expected to be launched in India next year. The upcoming SUV will have a unique design and Nissan will probably also introduce a different layout for the interior. In terms of pricing there may be slight differences between the two depending on the variants and features on offer.

3. Toyota Fortuner Hybrid

The Toyota Fortuner mild-hybrid debuted in South Africa earlier this year and will be launched in other markets in a phased manner. The SUV is powered by the familiar 2.8 liter 1GD-FTV diesel engine, paired with a 48V mild hybrid system, making it more economical.

According to Toyota, the Fortuner MHEV returns 5 percent more mileage than the regular Fortuner 2.8 diesel. This engine gives power of 201 bhp and torque of 500 Nm. Like the existing model, the Fortuner Hybrid will continue to be offered in both 2WD and 4WD configurations. Toyota Fortuner Hybrid will be available for sale in India next year i.e. in 2025.

4. Toyota Mini Fortuner

According to media reports, Toyota is working on a new powerful 4X4 SUV for the global markets and it will be positioned below the Fortuner. Based on a modified version of the familiar IMV platform, the SUV will likely have a 2,750 mm wheelbase which is similar to the Fortuner. Although it will be small in terms of length. Its length is expected to be less than 4.5 meters. In terms of powertrain, it will be powered by a turbo diesel engine and a petrol engine could also be a part of the package.

5. Volkswagen Teron

The Volkswagen Teron is expected to be launched in India sometime next year. Likely to be sold in the domestic market via the CKD route, the 3-row SUV is based on Volkswagen’s new MQB EVO platform that is shared with several other Volkswagen Group models internationally.

The Volkswagen Tayron is offered in multiple powertrain options including pure petrol, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) petrol as well as diesel, with 2WD and 4WD configurations. Volkswagen in India will likely offer the Teron with the familiar 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox.

6. New Skoda Kodiaq

The next-generation model of the Skoda Kodiaq made its international debut in October last year. Based on the new MQB-EVO platform, the dimensions of this SUV have increased, making it 61 mm longer. The India launch of the second-generation Kodiaq is expected next year.

The SUV will likely be sold here through the CBU route. Its price will go above Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom). The India-spec model will get the familiar 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. Like the current model, the upcoming new generation Skoda Kodiaq will get 4WD as standard.
