6GHz talk on the band, government drafts rules, open door for Wifi 6
WiFi 6 spectrum
The government has accepted the ongoing demand for 6GHz spectrum of tech companies for a long time. The central government has issued a notification to draft the rules related to delicing from 6 GHz bands. After the implementation of this deliction rule, WiFi 6 broadband will be entered in India and people will get superfasted connectivity in homes and offices. WiFi 6 requires a 6GHz band, for which Internet service providers and tech companies had been pleading with the government for a long time.
6GHz rule ready
According to the Gazette notification of May 16, 2025, the government has prepared a draft based on the powers provided by sections 3 (3) and 4 (6), along with section (2) and (H) of Section 56 of Section 56 of Section 56 of the Telecom Act, 2023 (44). According to the notification, low power and extremely low -power wireless access systems, including the 6GHz band radio local network, are excluded from the purview of the license.
This deliction rule will be applicable from 5925 to 6425 MHz band. The Department of Telecommunications has asked all stakeholders to comment by June 15 on this draft. After this, the framework will be completed for this.
The government said that complying with technical parameters, non-defense, non-protection and shared basis will not require any authority to install any wireless equipment for low-power indoor and very low power outdoor wireless access in 5925-6425 MHz on non-protection and shared basis.

The rule drafts by DOT states that all types of uses of low power 6GHz bands have been banned on oil platforms, land vehicles, boats and aircraft (except flying above 10,000 feet), and communication and controls with drones and unmanned air systems are also banned. This decision of the government can prove to be a game changer for India’s digital future. Many tech companies and internet service providers have appreciated the government’s decision.
Bif pleaded
Let me tell you that the Industry Body Broadband India Forum (BIF) has also written a letter related to this to Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on 11 April. In its letter, Bif said that this spectrum band is very important for better digital experience in new technology gadgets such as Meta Ray Ban Smart Glass, Sony PS5, Ar/VR headsets.
Due to the delay in the license process of this latest Wi-Fi band, companies are losing about 12.7 lakh crores every year. The Bif includes Meta, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Sisco as well as satellite companies Onweeb, Tata Nalco, Hughes.

What is 6GHz WiFi band?
The 6GHz is also a radio wave other spectrum band, with the help of which the device OTA i.e. over-the-air data can be exchanged. At present, only 2.4GHz and 5GHz band are used for Wi-Fi in India. The Wi-Fi router sold in India works on both these bands. Whether it is 2.4GHz or 5GHz or 6GHz The biggest difference between these spectrum band is detected by the number given in them.
Internet can be accessed at a speed of up to 2GBPS in 6GHz band. At the same time, internet can be accessed at the speed of 1GBPS in the current 5GHz band. Not only this, the coverage area of 6GHz spectrum band is very high. Because of this, connectivity in the device remains intact. Especially during streaming and gaming, users do not have to face network disconnections.
