Mumbai Police suspects gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s involvement in the murder of Congress leader Baba Siddiqui.
Mumbai: The murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique, who was shot dead by three miscreants in Mumbai on Saturday night, has led to a major police investigation across multiple states.
Mumbai Police has arrested two suspects — Karnail Singh and Dharamraj Kashyap — and is now probing the involvement of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, known for his links to high-profile crimes.
Baba Siddique shot four times by attackers
Baba Siddique, originally from Gopalganj in Bihar, was a well-known Congress leader in Maharashtra. He was shot four times by the attackers in Bandra East, Mumbai. Despite being rushed to Lilavati Hospital, Siddiqui succumbed to his injuries.
CCTV footage from the crime scene helped the police identify the attackers, leading to the arrest of two persons —Dharamraj Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh and Karnail Singh from Haryana. A third suspect remains at large, though police have identified him and are conducting raids to capture him.
According to the police, the two arrested shooters did not have much knowledge about Baba Siddiqui’s political or social influence. They are also young in age. Police suspect that someone else had asked them to carry out the crime. However, his name has not been revealed. The history sheets of both the criminals are being investigated.
Crime method points to Lawrence Bishnoi’s Gang
The attackers used a 9.9 mm pistol in the murder and police suspect that the method of the crime points to Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious gangster currently in jail. Although Bishnoi’s gang has neither confirmed nor denied involvement, police believe that a contract to kill Siddiqui may have been given to Bishnoi’s associates.
It is suspected that a meeting took place in Pune three months ago between Bishnoi’s henchmen and the person who ordered the murder.
Baba Siddiqui had close ties to Bollywood actor Salman Khan, which may have made him a target. Police revealed that Siddiqui had received death threats 15 days before his murder, linked to his association with Salman Khan.
The nature of the threats and the similarities in planning remind investigators of a 2018 plot by Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang to kill Salman Khan. In that case, Bishnoi’s shooter, Sampat Nehra, conducted a detailed recce of Khan in Hyderabad, though the plan was foiled when Haryana STF caught Nehra.
Gang’s possible involvement under probe
Mumbai Police’s investigation now extends beyond the city, with teams expected to question Lawrence Bishnoi in jails across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. Bishnoi has been attempting to kill Salman Khan for six years, and police believe this may be another attempt by his gang to target people close to the actor.
Investigators are also looking into the possibility that someone within Siddique’s close circle may have provided crucial information to the killers. Since Siddiqui was under Y-category security, police suspect an inside spy who informed the attackers about Siddique’s movements.
The three criminals involved in the shooting reportedly travelled by auto rickshaw to the spot where they waited for a long time before opening fire. Police believe the attackers had detailed information about Siddiqui’s location, which strengthens the suspicion of insider involvement.
