15 AAP councilors resign in Delhi: Announcement to create separate factions in MCD
In the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), 15 city councilors of AAP have resigned from the party. He has also announced to form a third front called Indraprastha Vikas Party. Mukesh Goyal will lead the new front.
Other councilors resigned include Hemchand Goyal, Himani Jain, Runakshi Sharma, Usha Sharma, Ashok Pandey, Rakhi Yadav, Sahib Kumar, Rajesh Kumar Ladi, Manisha, Suman Anil Rana, Devinder Kumar and Dinesh Bhardwaj.
Councilors wrote in a press release, ‘All of us were selected by AAP ticket in the year 2022 in Councilors MCD. However, despite winning the election in 2022, the top leadership of the party could not run the MCD properly.
‘The coordination of big leaders with councilors remained negligible, due to which the party has come into opposition. We are resigning from the primary membership of the councilor party for not fulfilling the promise made to the public.
Raja Iqbal Singh of BJP became Mayor on 25 April
Elections were held in Delhi on 25 April last month for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. AAP boycotted the election. There was a contest between the BJP and the Congress, in which BJP candidate Raja Iqbal Singh won the post of mayor with 133 votes.
Apart from this, BJP councilor Jai Bhagwan Yadav was elected deputy mayor. A total of 142 votes were cast. One vote was declared illegal. The Congress got only 8 votes. The BJP’s victory in the election was already decided as it had 117 councilors and the Congress only eight councilors.
238 seats in MCD, 12 seats vacant
Every year, Delhi holds the post of mayor and body elections every five years. In the last civic elections of 2022, AAP won 134 seats and won a majority. BJP got 104 seats and Congress got 9 seats. A total of 250 seats were voted. Before the integration of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, there was voting for 272 wards.
The number of current councilors in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is 238. 12 out of 250 seats were vacant due to some councilors being elected to the Delhi Assembly and a Lok Sabha. Out of 250 seats, BJP has 117 councilors.
AAP had 113 councilors, but the number has come down after the resignation of the councilors. The Congress has only eight seats. In addition to 250 councilors in the MCD mayor election, 10 MPs from Delhi (seven from Lok Sabha and three from Rajya Sabha) vote, which leads to a total of 274 votes.
