In 1958, Manorama entered the film industry with the Tamil film ‘Malayitta Mangai’. He then acted in many films, but in the 1960s he moved towards comedy. His pairing was a big hit with actor Nagesh. He acted in about 1500 films and did more than 5000 stage shows. Due to his versatility, he was known by the surname of ‘Comedy Queen’. Manorama received several awards for her contribution. In 1995, he received the ‘Kalamamani’ award. In 2002, the Government of India honored him with ‘Padma Shri’. Apart from this, he also won the National Film Award for the film ‘Pudhia Pathi’. His achievements also include a Guinness World Record, in which he acted in more than 1000 films.

Manorama was married to SM Ramanathan, the manager of her drama troupe in the year 1954. She had a son Bhupathi in 1955, but shortly after her birth, her husband left him citing astrologer. This incident put Manorama in deep shock, but she raised her son alone. He did not marry again and focused on his career. Manorama’s life was a wonderful confluence of cinema and politics. He worked in films with former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai, MG Karunanidhi, MG Ramachandran, J Jayalalithaa and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister NT Rama Rao. Manorama died on 10 October 2015 in Chennai. He was 78 years old at the time of his death. His death created such an empty space in the film industry, which cannot be filled even after years.
