Glenn Maxwell surprised the world, announced his retirement from ODI cricket
Australia’s all -rounder Glenn Maxwell has surprised his fans by retiring from ODI cricket. Yes, Maxwell has said goodbye to the 13 -year ODI career. Maxwell today (June 2, 2025) announced that he was retiring from ODI format for Australia, since his debut in 2012, he had scored around 4,000 runs in his 149 ODIs.
The 36 -year -old Maxwell told the selection chief George Bailey during the February Champions Trophy tournament that he would not think he would be able to make it to the 2027 ODI World Cup. The two -time ODI World Cup winner told the final Word Podcast, “I said there, ‘I don’t think I will be able to do this’. I think the time has come to plan for the people coming to my place, they should work on it and try to make that place for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully they will get adequate edge.
Maxwell had made up his mind to retire from ODI before a finger injury, due to which he was out of the Indian Premier League this year. Maxwell is the fourth member of the 2023 World Cup team to win in India, who retired from ODIs. However, Maxwell will continue to play T20 for Australia and he has not said goodbye to his first class career.
Speaking about his retirement, Maxwell said, “My decision to retire from ODI international cricket probably came after the first few matches of the Champions Trophy. I felt that I have given myself a very good opportunity to fit and get ready for those matches. The first match in Lahore, we played on a rock-hardened outfield. After that match I was very upset. Gaya, where I got a little more time to relax a little and prepare myself for the next match. “
Speaking further, Maxwell said, “In the next match against Afghanistan, we fielded for 50 overs on a very wet outfield. It was slippery and I could not get ready properly. I began to realize that if I do not have the right circumstances in 50 overs cricket, then my body struggles to deal with it. It seems that it seems that 50 overs and survives are almost over -overs. The best performance is a distant thing and then going there to try to perform well with the bat.
It will be difficult for any Australian player to replace Maxwell. This fiery right -handed batsman holds a different place among the great ODI batsmen. Only one of the batsmen who maintains strike-rate above 120 has scored more than 400 runs and is Andre Russell of West Indies who have scored at a strike rate of 130.22. Maxwell has landed the most batting strike-card in ODI history, who has scored at least 2,000 runs. He was also part of the two World Cup titles (2015 and 2023) winning team. Apart from this, his off -spin bowling took him 77 wickets at an average of 47.32.
