Life imprisonment for rape in Anna University in Chennai

Gyansesekaran, convicted of high -profile sexual abuse case at Anna University in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday. Women’s Court Judge M Rajalakshmi said that the convict will have to stay in jail at least 30 years without any exemption. The convict has also been fined 90 thousand rupees.

Gyansekaran was convicted on 28 May. All 11 allegations including sexual harassment, rape, intimidation and kidnapping against him were proved to be true. At least 29 witnesses testified in the case and the police had filed a 100 -page charge sheet.

The case is of December 2024. Gyansekaran entered the university campus at 8 pm on December 23 and raped a 19 -year engineering student. The victim was with his young man friend. Gyansekaran exploited the girl after beating the friend.

The convict also made a video of the incident to blackmail the victim. Police arrested Gyanashekaran the next day after investigating the CCTV footage installed at the university campus. He used to set up a biryani shop near the university.

After being convicted, Gyansekaran demanded a minimum punishment citing the need to stay at home to take care of his elderly mother and eight -year -old daughter. However, the judge said that he should get maximum punishment in view of his conviction in all the allegations.

Palaniswami of Opposition Leader Edppadi, after the court verdict, said that during sexual harassment, the convict had spoken to a person, whom he calls as ‘sir’. The person has not yet been identified. However, police say no one else was involved in the incident.

Rape incident took place in high security zone
The name of Anna University in Tamil Nadu is included in the list of top universities in India. There was a lot of uproar in the entire Tamil Nadu after the rape incident here. The FIR of the case was leaked online, which could reveal the identity of the victim.

The Anna University Campus has Raj Bhavan and IIT Madras, which falls in the high-quality zone. Despite this, the incident of rape from engineering students raised questions on security. In protest against the incident, the then state president of BJP, Annamalai, rained himself.
