Bengal Municipality Job Case: ED interrogating former municipal body president, retired bureaucrat

Kolkata News Desk!!! ED officials probing the multi-crore civic body recruitment case in West Bengal have been questioning a former chairman of a municipality and a retired top bureaucrat in North 24 Parganas district since Tuesday morning. The two persons being questioned are Panchu Roy, former chairman of South Dumdum Municipality in North 24 Parganas, and Jyotishaman Chattopadhyay, former director of the Directorate of Local Bodies under the state Municipal and Urban Development Department.

Chattopadhyay was associated with the department between 2017 and 2019, a period when irregularities in recruitment were at their peak. Sources said that this is the second consecutive day that Chattopadhyay was questioned by ED officials. Meanwhile, another ED team is questioning West Bengal Minister Jyotipri Mallick since Tuesday morning in connection with the multi-crore ration scam in the state. He was discharged from a private hospital in Kolkata late on Monday evening and brought to the ED’s Salt Lake office. Central agency officials allowed the minister to rest overnight and his questioning began after breakfast on Tuesday morning.

Jyotipriya Mallik was arrested by ED officials on Friday morning. After he fell unconscious on the court premises, the special court in Kolkata had ordered that his 11-day ED custody would begin only after he is released from the hospital.
