Manipur: Three police officers, sent as reinforcements after cop’s killing, injured in ambush

Imphal: Three Manipur cops sustained bullet injuries after militants ambushed their convoy, which was sent to Moreh town for reinforcement in response to the killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, in Tengnoupal district on Tuesday. All three injured police officers have been shifted to a hospital in Manipur’s capital Imphal. One of the police officers is said to be in critical condition.

Assam Rifles jawans rushed to the ambush site

According to reports, the shocking incident took place around 3 p.m. near Sinam village along Imphal-Moreh NH-102 in Tengnoupal district. A team of Assam Rifles, which was sent to the ambush spot, rescued the police officers and took them to Imphal. Meanwhile, the militants, who attacked the reinforcement team, fled the spot and efforts were underway to nab them.

Anand shot dead in Moreh town

Earlier in the day, SDPO Chingtham Anand was shot dead by armed militants while he along with other cops were inspecting the newly constructed helipad in Tengnoupal’s Moreh town, which is dominated by the Kuki-Zo community.

 

Ex-gratia announced for Anand’s kin

Saddened by the killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said the culprits will be arrested soon. Also, the Manipur government announced ex-gratia for the next of kin of Anand, who was a native of Haobam Marak village in Imphal.

Protests erupt in Imphal West

Thousands of protesters hit the streets in Imphal West district to demonstrate against the killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand in Moreh. Also, a committee has decided not to take Chingtham’s body until the killers are not arrested.

Manipur government recommends banning tribal group under UAPA

The Manipur government has sent a recommendation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Centre to ban the World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC) under section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
