How MS Dhoni outfoxed Bangladesh with his Bengali knowledge
MS Dhoni’s remarkable journey, from being a railway ticket collector in Kharagpur to becoming one of cricket’s finest captains, has been a source of inspiration for many. The wicketkeeper-batsman is widely respected, not only in India but also on the global cricket stage. He is also the only skipper in the history of the game who have won all the major titles in his kitty as a captain, including world cups in both 20 overs and 50 overs along with Champions Trophy.
During his formative years in Kharagpur, West Bengal, Dhoni acquired proficiency in the local language, Bengali. In a recent event, the 42-year-old shared an incident about how he used his knowledge of Bengali to outsmart Bangladesh during a cricket match.
“I had a railways job in Kharagpur and at that time Bengali was very good for me. Even if I speak again, I will speak softly, whom will it harm? [When I used to work at Kharagpur in Railways, my Bengali was very well. Now if I speak, I may make mistakes]but I can understand Bengali very well,” Dhoni said at the event.
“Interestingly, we were playing the match in Bangladesh, so I was batting. They didn’t know that I came from Bengal. That keeper was shouting from the other side and telling the fast bowler to bowl. I first found out what he had to put. That’s when we finished the match and then we started talking again. [Interestingly, once, we were playing a match in Bangladesh, and they didn’t know I understood Bengali. Their keeper was suggesting something to the bowler, so I already knew what he would bowl. So, once the match ended, they (Bangladeshi players) were talking among themselves and seeing my reaction, they were like He understands Bengali]Dhoni recalled.
