Road Accidents: According to a new report released by the government on Tuesday, a total of 4,61,312 road accidents occurred in 2022, in which 1,68,491 people lost their lives, while 4,43,366 people were injured. There has been an alarming increase of 11.9% in accidents and 9.4% increase in the fatality rate year-on-year. The number of people getting injured in 2022 has increased by 15.3% compared to the previous year.
The report said that compared to last year, there has been an increase of 11.9 percent in accidents, 9.4 percent in deaths and 15.3 percent in injuries. According to the report of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), a total of 4,61,312 accidents have been recorded in the country during 2022, of which 1,51,997 (32.9%) occurred on national highways including expressways. 1,06,682 (23.1%) were recorded on state highways and the remaining 2,02,633 (43.9%) were recorded on other roads.
Youth became the most victimized
Of the total 1,68,491 deaths reported in 2022, 61,038 (36.2%) were on national highways, 41,012 (24.3%) were on state highways and 66,441 (39.4%) were on other roads. A large number of youth have been injured in this. MoRTH said that during 2022, 66.5 percent of the victims were youth in the age group of 18 to 45 years. People in the working age group of 18 to 60 years account for 83.4% of total road accident deaths. If we talk about bike accidents alone, the figure is around 72,000, which is more than 200 per day.
Most accidents happened in this state
It is interesting to note that about 68% of road accident deaths have occurred in rural areas, while urban areas have reported 32% of the total accident deaths in the country. The MoRTH report further said, “Among the vehicle categories involved in road accidents, for the second consecutive year, two-wheelers accounted for the highest share in total accidents and deaths during 2022. Light vehicles including cars, jeeps and taxis are at the second position.” The highest number of deaths in road accidents was recorded in Uttar Pradesh.
The report said that Uttar Pradesh tops the list in terms of the number of deaths due to road accidents (22,595 i.e. 13.4%), followed by Tamil Nadu (17,884 i.e. 10.6%).
