New Delhi: South Africa defeated New Zealand by 190 runs at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Wednesday to claim the top spot on the points table in the 2023 ODI World Cup and inch closer to a spot in the semi-finals. The Proteas rode on terrific centuries from Quinton de Kock and Rassie Van der Dussen to post a big total of 357 runs on the board before their bowlers produced a dominant show to skittle out the Kiwis for a paltry 167 runs in the run-chase.
It was expected to be a close contest as the two teams headed into the much-anticipated clash. However, South Africa made it a lop-sided affair by dominating the proceedings with the bat and the ball. Batting first, the Proteas got off to a decent start before De Kock and Van der Dussen went all guns blazing to share a 200-run stand for the second wicket.
While De Kock scored 114 runs off 116 balls to become the leading run-getter of the tournament and the first batter to breach the 500-run mark in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Van der Dussen scored 133 off 118 deliveries. The duo set the stage for a huge total for the Proteas before David Miller’s quickfire cameo of 30-ball 53 propelled them to 357/4 in 50 overs.

After their commanding display with the bat, the South African bowlers ensured New Zealand had no chance whatsoever of making a comeback in the game as they produced a clinical display. Led by spinner Keshav Maharaj, who bagged a four-wicket haul, South Africa skittled out New Zealand for 167 runs to register a thumping victory by 190 runs.
