Seoul: The South Korean army has taken a big step towards reducing tension with the neighboring country North Korea. South Korea has banned the broadcast of anti -North Korea propaganda through loudspeakers on the border. North Korea blows garbage -filled balloons towards South Korea as part of a psychological war campaign, after which South Korea resumed broadcasts in June last year.
South Korea initiative
South Korea had earlier banned this broadcast for a year. The South Korea’s Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that the step has been taken as part of efforts to promote confidence restoration and peace efforts between the two Korean countries. Earlier, the new President of South Korea Lee J-Mayang indicated to resume the talks with North Korea.
Korea was divided into 2 parts
Korea was divided into 1945 after World War II. Japan, who had captured Korea since 1910, lost in war. The US and the Soviet Union then temporarily divided Korea into two parts. The Soviet Union had influence in the north and the influence of America in the south. In 1948, different governments were formed in both regions. A communist rule in North Korea (led by Kim Il-Sung) and a democratic rule in South Korea
Korean War (1950–1953)
In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, leading to the Korean War. This war lasted for three years and killed about 3 million people. The United Nations, mainly led by the US, came to assist South Korea, while China supported North Korea. A ceasefire agreement was signed in 1953, but till date there has been no formal peace treaty, due to which the two countries are technically in a state of war.
Due to dispute
- North Korea runs under a monotonial dictatorial system (Communist rule), while South Korea is democracy. This ideological difference creates the biggest conflict between the two countries.
- Both countries often firing on the borders. There have been many military clashes around DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). North Korea’s missile test and nuclear program are also a major cause of stress.
- There have been serious allegations of human rights violations in North Korea. Stories related to the people coming from there to South Korea also deepen the dispute.
- South Korea speaks of integration of the two countries through peace, while North Korea wants integration under the armed forces and political control.
