His family moved to Rajkot in Gujarat after political turmoil in 1960. When Rupani was in school, he attended the RSS branch. He then joined the BJP through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. In 2014, he contested his assembly elections and won the by -election from Rajkot West. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012. Vijay Rupani has also worked as the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2016 to 2021.
