The age limit for NDA is 16.5 to 19.5 years. After three years of training in the NDA, cadets are sent to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, where they are commissioned as a lieutenant after one year of training.
2. CDS (Joint Defense Service) Examination: Graduate youths can also become lieutenants in the Indian Army through the CDS exam. This examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It consists of written examination, SSB interview and medical test. IMA, OTA (Officers Training Academy), Chennai through CDS become officers after training.
3. Technical Entry Scheme (TES): 12th pass students who have Physics, Chemistry and Maths subjects can apply for TES. It has a direct SSB interview, and selected candidates get a commission as a lieutenant after four years engineering degree and one year pre-commission training.
4. NCC Special Entry Scheme: Candidates who have ‘C’ certificate of NCC can become officers directly through SSB interview without written examination.
