Unempolyment data: The unemployment rate in the country increased to 5.6 percent during May, which was 5.1 percent in the month of April. This information was given in the government data released on Monday. This increase in unemployment rate has been seen mainly due to seasonal changes and excessive heat in parts of the country. The data recorded in the ‘Current Weekly Status’ (CWS) survey of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation shows that the unemployment rate in all age groups increased to 5.6 percent during May 2025.

The CWS reflects the prescribed activities over a period of 7 days before the date of the survey. The Ministry released the first monthly periodic labor force survey (PLFS) last month to show the correct picture of the employment situation. According to the latest survey, the unemployment rate in men last month was 5.6 percent, while women had a slightly higher 5.8 percent. The youth have been seen to bear more unemployment. In May, the national unemployment rate increased to 15 percent for the age group of 15-29 as compared to 13.8 percent in April.
Increased unemployment in both urban and rural areas
The unemployment rate in urban areas increased from 17.2 percent of April to 17.9 percent in May, while in rural areas it increased from 12.3 percent to 13.7 percent in rural areas. Especially, the unemployment rate among women in the age group of 15-29 increased to 16.3 percent in the entire country as compared to 14.4 percent in April. For this age group in men, this rate increased from 13.6 percent to 14.5 percent. The data has also revealed that the labor force participation rate (LFPR) among people aged 15 years and above declined to 54.8 percent in May, which was 55.6 percent in April. The participation rate in rural areas declined from 58 percent to 56.9 percent while in urban areas it declined from 50.7 percent to 50.4 percent.
