Big banners and artists have also returned to this genre with the success of the horror movie like Satan and Munjya. The name of female 2 can also be added to it which has a mixture of horror and comedy. ‘Maa’ also has mythology with horror, although the way the film has been promoted, the audience keeps waiting to be afraid.

Everyone knows that when it is made on children, the mother becomes a goddess and the form of Kali ends the demons. Director Vishal Furia, whose films of ‘Chori’ series were based on this track, try to touch a subject in ‘Maa’, which is deeply in the Indian psyche, mother’s Mamta and Goddess Kali’s rage form.

Ambika (Kajol) is living a happy life with her husband Shubhankar (Indranil Sengupta) and daughter Shweta (Kherin Sharma). The mascot is a resident of Chandrapur village in West Bengal, which broke all relations. Due to his father’s death, he has to go to the village. The situation happens in such a way that Ambika and Shweta also have to come to the village, where they are welcomed by Joydev (Ronit Roy). The dark secrets of the past hidden in the walls of the mansion and the shrubs of the forest gradually begin to appear. A silent servant (Dibyendu Bhattacharya), blood-soaked past stories and a demon ‘Rakshabij’ gradually make Ambika’s world dreadful.

The biggest strength of the film is her idea, in which the mother’s strength, rebellion against patriarchy and a woman’s conversion as Kali have been highlighted. A subject like menstruation is also easily shown in the film, which is still forbidden for many people today. But the way the story was woven and shown on screen is very weak in putting all these ideas on screen. Especially the first half is so loose that the audience keeps waiting to be afraid, and by the time it is afraid, it is too late.

In the second half, the film gains momentum, but by reaching the climax, everything appears in such a hurry that emotional engagement starts to break. There are some scenes that are surprised, such as Ambika and Shweta’s arrival at Chandrapur, car after interval, climax fight, but the number of such scenes is less.

The author could not make the screenplay entertaining and could not connect the audience to the characters. His monotonous writing removes the audience from the film. Mother-daughter’s chemistry does not leave an emotional effect that the film needed.

The biggest negative point of the film is its VFX. The producer has shown skimp in this case, while everyone knows how important VFX is in horror films. The graphics of the demon looks like a television serial and its scary does not become as effective. Many times scary scenes become a character of laughter due to weak VFX.

Kajol is a strong actress and she has proved this again in ‘Maa’. Ronit Roy is a big surprise of this film. Kherin Sharma has given his character well, while Indranil Sengupta leaves an impact in his small role.

Views like Haveli, Jungle and Kali Pooja are visually attractive in the production design of the film. The glimpses of women dancing in red-white sarees and burning flames in the plates are visible, but these scenes also do not hide the weakness of the story.

The background score of Amar Mohile is not of the level that is necessary in such films. Pushkar Singh’s cinematography gives some great frames.

Overall, the mother appears as an average film. Kajol and Ronit Roy’s performance is life -threatening, but drowns with weak writing and VFX film.
