Vinod Kambli: Vinod Kambli (Vinod Kambli) in Indian cricket has often been in the headlines due to his alcohol addiction, but do you know that even more alcoholic was another Indian cricketer? His passion for alcohol was such that he himself invented a special peg. The extent was reached when this addiction became the reason for his life. He could not save himself from alcohol addiction and died due to liver failure.
Actually, we are talking about Maharaja Bhupendra Singh of Patiala royal family, whose name is special in Indian cricket history. In the case of alcohol, Bhupendra Singh was more than Vinod Kambli.
He was one of the first royal personalities to play first class cricket for India. Born in 1891, the Maharaja held Patiala’s throne in 1900 at the age of 9 and remained king till 1938. He was very fond of cricket, but his passion towards alcohol was much more than that.
Royal style and wild alcoholism
Maharaja Bhupendra Singh of Patiala royalty, who was the grandfather of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, had played from the first class cricket team of India. His attachment to alcohol was so high that he invented ‘Patiala Paag’.
He gave him a peg of 120 mL to defeat the British team, which later became famous as ‘Patiala Paig’. The effect of this heavy peg was so much that the next morning the British players could not stand in the field manner.
Maharaja Bhupendra Singh’s alcohol addiction was so serious that it had a direct impact on his health. He died in 1938 at the age of just 52, due to which the liver failure is said to be. Even though they were from the royal family, habits ended them quickly.
Kambli’s addiction also ruined career
Vinod Kambli, who once counted among the most talented batsmen in India, could not handle his career due to alcohol addiction. His habit had increased to such an extent that he had to be admitted to the hospital.
The personal life of Vinod Kambli was also badly affected by drugs and two wives also left him. Due to Kambli’s alcoholism, his closest friend Sachin Tendulkar also distanced him.
Cricket experts believe that if Kambli had controlled his habits, his career could have been much longer and successful. Their anecdote tells that the habits whether common or royal, consequences can be the same.
