Moscow: Russia has become the first country in the world to formally recognize Afghanistan’s rule. Since the Taliban came to power in the year 2021, his government in Afghanistan has not been formally recognized by any other country yet. But now Russia became the first country in the world to do so. Along with this, Moscow also removed the Taliban from the list of its banned organizations.
What did the Taliban say on Russia’s decision?
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it had received diplomatic recognition from Afghanistan’s newly appointed Ambassador Gul Hasan Hasan. The ministry said in a statement that formal recognition to the Afghan government will promote “productive bilateral cooperation”. Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry described it as a historic step and the Taliban Foreign Minister Aamir Khan Mutki welcomed the decision, saying it is “a good example for other countries”.
Taliban has been demanding international recognition
The Taliban has been demanding international recognition since coming to power in Afghanistan in August 2021. After the return of the US and NATO forces, the Taliban took power in Afghanistan. He has also implemented his harsh interpretation of Islamic law in Afghanistan. Till now no country had formally recognized the Taliban administration, although the Taliban has held high-level talks with many countries and has also formed diplomatic relations with some countries including China and the United Arab Emirates.
Taliban ban on women
Since coming to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban government has been isolated on the world stage to a large extent, especially due to the sanctions imposed on women. Although the Taliban promised more liberal rule than the rule of 1996 to 2001 when he came to power earlier, he implemented several restrictions on women and girls soon after assuming power in 2021. Women have been stopped from going to most jobs and public places such as parks, bathrooms and gyms, while girls have also been denied the sixth grade education.
Putin decided on Sergei’s advice
In recent times, Russian authorities have emphasized the need to join the Taliban to help stabilize Afghanistan and lifted the ban on the Taliban in April. Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Dimitri Jhirnov, said in his statement on the government channel One Television that the decision to give formal recognition to the Taliban government was taken by President Vladimir Putin on the advice of External Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov. Jhirnov said that the decision reflects Russia’s “honest effort for the development of full relations with Afghanistan”. (AP)
