Why not take each other’s name during the Kanwar Yatra?
Why kanwariyas are called bhole: Every year the month of Sawan arrives, Shiva devotees from all over the country go on a Kandar Yatra with the cheers of “Har-Har Mahadev” and “Bol Bomb”. These devotees take a long and difficult journey by taking Ganga water from different rivers and finally perform Jalabhishek on Shivling. In this journey, there is a tremendous confluence of faith, determination and devotion.
But one thing and one thing that often attracts the attention of people during this journey is that the devotees who have gone on the Kavad Yatra, do not call each other by name. Why does this happen Is this just a religious tradition or is there any deep faith and secret behind it? Let’s know in detail.
Tradition of not taking names during Kavad Yatra
Kavad Yatra is considered a penance, a fast and a special devotional journey. During this journey, Kanwariyas keep distance from their worldly life. They move forward on the path of devotion, where every breath is immersed in Shiva’s name. In such a situation, calling each other by name seems to return to worldliness. They want to be absorbed in devotion to the Lord Shiva on this journey, so they only chant Shiva names like “Bol Bomb”, “Jai Shiva”, “Bum-Bum Bhole” during this period.
It is not only a faith but also a psychological process, when the person accepts his personal introduction and identity as a soul dedicated to himself.
A sense of equality
Another big reason for the renunciation of names is, experience of equality. Whether someone is from the village or the city, is rich or poor, when all become “bols bombs”, every difference between them disappears. This tradition strengthens unity, cooperation and equality in society. Every Kanvadia becomes each other’s brother, without any identity, caste or class.
Name meant to renounce
The renunciation of the name in the Kavad Yatra is a symbol of the renunciation of ego. The name is a carrier of the person’s identity and ego, but when a person travels as a “bomb”, he has left his ego.
He is now only a seeker, a servant of Shiva. That is why no one is big in the journey nor small; Neither a leader, nor followers; All equal, all in the name of Shiva. So when a partner is left behind or needs help, the voice comes, “bomb, wait”, “Bol bomb, handle”, “Jai Bhole, with”, no name, just Shiva’s name.
Discipline of Shiv Bhakti
According to folklity, during the journey of Kanwar, Kanwariyas are in the service of Shiva, and during this time they do not see themselves like a normal human being. Many religious texts and legends mention that during this journey, devotees become Shivagan. It is also believed that taking someone’s name can break his “tenacity” or weakened his resolve. By taking the name, the person’s “maya” can wake up, he started paying attention to the house, family or worldly responsibilities. For this reason, the renunciation of names is considered one of the basic rules of the journey.
