Dubai: Major information has been shared by Amnesty International about Saudi Arabia. Amnesty International said on Monday that there has been a record increase in cases of death penalty in Saudi Arabia last year. Most of these cases are related to drugs. Last year 345 people were sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia. According to Amnesty, this is the largest number in more than three decades. The group said that in the first six months of this year itself, 180 people have been sentenced to death, indicating that this record may break again.
Cases are related to drug
Worker group Riprav said that about two -thirds of the people who were hanged this year were convicted in drug related cases. Amnesty has also expressed similar concern about being hanged in drug cases. Saudi Arabia has not commented on why the death sentence in the country is increasing.
Saudi officials did not answer
Saudi officials did not answer the detailed questions of the ‘Associated Press’ about why the death penalty is being used in the death sentence and drug addiction. However, it is contrary to the comments of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, who underlined in 2022 that they have limited its use to murder cases only. Saudi Arabia is one of the Middle East countries where allegations related to drug can be sentenced to death. These include Iran, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi is ranked after China and Iran in the case of death penalty.

Neither the knowledge of the law, nor the rights know about the rights
Amnesty has documented cases of 25 foreign nationals who are currently facing death penalty, or who were recently hanged for drug related offenses. Amnesty said that in those cases, the prisoners were neither aware of the legal system nor their rights, nor did they have any legal representation. Amnesty said that foreign nationals faced additional challenges while trying to ensure fair hearing.
The number of foreign nationals is more than half
According to the Reprus, more than half of the people who were hanged in the country this year were foreign nationals. In a similar case, Egypt’s Asam Ahmed, in 2021, disappeared while working on a fishing boat in Sinai. A month later, Ahmed’s family reported that he was detained in Saudi Arabia and sentenced to death for drug trafficking. Ahmed claims that the owner of the boat forced him to carry a package for him on the strength of a gun. (AP)
