New Delhi/Chennai: Controversy over the film ‘Udaipur files’ is increasing. Now a PIL has been filed in the Madras High Court demanding a ban on it. On the advice of Maulana Mahmud Asad Madni, president of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, Mahetamim Maulana Abul Qasim Nomani of Darul Uloom Deoband, Jamiat Ulama Tamil Nadu has filed this petition demanding a ban on the release of the film. The number of this petition is 105184/2025.

What is the reason for the demand to stop?

The petitioner has been requested by the court to direct the State Government, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Central Film Certification Board (CBFC) to suspend the film’s release with immediate effect and necessary amendments should be made by reviewing within the legal scope of its content. The petitioner feared that the content of the film is highly inflammatory and disgusting, which can severely harm communal harmony in the country. According to the trailer and media reports, a sensitive communal event in the film is presented in a sensational manner and Muslims are displayed as a radical, ruthless and terrorism -related community.

Did Darul Uloom targe Deoband?

The petition said that the saddest aspect of this is that the trailer of the film targeted a reputed religious institution like Darul Uloom Deoband. By connecting the slogan of “Sir Tan Se Juda” directly to Deoband, a person is depicted with a major responsibility of Darul Uloom, which is not only an institution, but a serious attack on an academic and spiritual center of the Muslim community. The most objectionable aspect of the film is that a former BJP spokesperson included an objectionable statement in the pride of Prophet Mohammed (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), which led to a global scale protests and was expelled from the party.

These allegations made on Central Film Certification Board

The petitioner says that although the Constitution of India provides freedom of expression, constitutional boundaries for this freedom to protect public system, morality and national unity are also prescribed. He has presented the side that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is negligent in following its constitutional and legal responsibilities in evaluating and approval of the film. Haji Hasan Ahmed said that on July 4, 2025, the state officials had written in writing to stop the release of the film, that the release of the film should be stopped, but no action was taken. In this regard, we have moved the court on the consultation and instructions of Mohtamim, President of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind and Mohtamim of Darul Uloom Deoband and appealed to him to issue an interim order immediately, so that the film is broadcast on theaters, OTT platforms or social media until the necessary amendments are made by legally re-examining its content.
