Trump taking revenge on his friend Bolsonaro? 50 % tariff imposed on Brazil
Donald Trump, Lula da Silva and Jare Bolsonaro.
Washington: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 50 per cent import tax on Brazil. He cited the ongoing trial against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro behind it. Trump called the trial a ‘conspiracy to harass unnecessarily’ and said that this is a wrong action against his friend Bolsonaro. It is clear that Trump’s tariff decision dominates more personal relationships and political issues due to economic reasons.
‘It is necessary to eliminate this conspiracy immediately’
Trump wrote a letter to his social media platform Truth Social to Brazilian President Luiz Eneasio Lula Da Silva. In this, he said, ‘This trial should be stopped. This is a conspiracy to unnecessarily bother which is necessary to eliminate immediately. Trump believes that the Supreme Court of Brazil is misbehaving with Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is accused of conspiring to remain in power after defeat in the 2022 election. Trump himself has also faced allegations in 2023 to try to reverse the defeat in the 2020 US election, which makes his sympathy to his Bolsonaro.
Brazil surprised Trump’s decision
Brazil Vice President Geraldo Alkmin expressed surprise at Trump’s decision. He said, ‘There is no reason to put a tariff. Trump has been given incorrect information. Alkmin said that the current Brazilian President Lula himself has been in jail for almost 2 years, but he never questioned the judiciary. He said, “This matter is of our judicial system, there is no need to interfere in it.” Let us know that Trump also criticized the Supreme Court of Brazil for the fine imposed on social media companies, especially ‘X’. He called it an ‘illegal censorship’.
Why is the case going on Bolsonaro?
Bolsonaro is accused of conspiring to remain in power after defeat in the 2022 election. 26 other accused will also be heard in the court and the decision is expected by September. Bolsonaro has already stopped contesting elections by 2030. Trump has announced a 50 % tariff on Brazil from 1 August, which is much higher than 10 per cent tariffs of her ‘Liberation Day’ announcement in April. Brazil sells products such as oil, orange juice, coffee, iron and steel to the US. Last year, the US had a $ 6.8 billion trade surplus with Brazil, that is, the US sold more goods to Brazil. In such a situation, this tariff of Trump looks more political and private than economic.
