Tharoor raised questions on emergency, said- It is necessary to take lessons, Sanjay Gandhi forcibly made spermatozoa
Shashi Tharoor
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has questioned the Emergency in 1975. In an article recently, he did not remember it as a ‘black chapter’ of Indian history, and said to take lessons from it. In his article published on Thursday in the Malayalam language newspaper ‘Deepika’, Shashi Tharoor said that the steps taken for discipline and arrangement many times turn into such cruelty, which cannot be justified in any way.
Sterilization campaign arbitrary decision: Tharoor
50 years ago, on 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed an emergency in the country, which remained in force till 21 March 1977. In his article, Tharoor described the forced sterilization campaign run by Indira Gandhi’s son Sanjay Gandhi as an ‘example of cruelty’. He wrote, “Violence and pressure were resorted to to meet the target in poor rural areas. In cities like New Delhi, slums were brutally broken. Thousands became homeless and no attention was paid to them.” According to Tharoor, this campaign was arbitrary and cruel decision, which has a deep negative impact on people’s lives.
Advice not to take democracy lightly
Tharoor insisted on not taking democracy lightly in his article. He described it as a ‘valuable heritage’, which is necessary to preserve continuously. He warned that the dissatisfaction of focusing power, suppressing disagreement and bypassing the Constitution may come back in many forms.
Tharoor said that such works are often justified in the name of country interest or stability. In this sense, the emergency stands as a warning. He said in the conclusion that the patrons of democracy will always have to be cautious, so that such situations do not arise again. This article from Tharoor has come before the completion of 50 years of Emergency.
