Ujjaval nikam
New Delhi: President Draupadi Murmu has nominated four distinguished persons for the Rajya Sabha using his powers under Article 80 (1) (a) and its section (3) of the Constitution. This nomination has been done to fill the seats that were first vacant due to the retirement of the nominated members.
Four prestigious persons nominated include eminent lawyer Ujjwal Devrao Nikam, Kerala senior social worker and educationist C. Sadanandan Mastay, former Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Shringla and well-known historian Meenakshi Jain.
About nominated members-
- Bright Nikam: Ujjwal Nikam is a famous lawyer who has served as a special public prosecutor in many high-profile criminal cases. He is particularly known for his important role in punishing Ajmal Kasab to death in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case. He has also represented several other major cases for the Maharashtra government, including the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case.
- C. Sadanandan Mastay: C. Sadanandan Mastay coming from Kerala is a senior social worker and educationist. He has made a long remarkable contribution in the field of education and social work, as he has received this nomination as an honor.
- Harshvardhan Shringla: Harshvardhan Shringla, a 1984 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has been a former Foreign Secretary. He has served as India’s ambassador to the United States, Bangladesh and Thailand. Their diplomatic skills have been commendable in difficult times such as the Kovid-19 epidemic and ensuring a safe return of Indian students from Ukraine.
- Meenakshi Jain: Meenakshi Jain is a noted historian and educationist who has written many important research and books on Indian history. His academic works and writing have provided a new insight into the field of history.
How are members nominated in Rajya Sabha?
The Indian Constitution empowers the President to nominate 12 members in the Rajya Sabha. These members are individuals who have gained special knowledge or practical experience in fields like art, literature, science and social service. These nominated members do not need to be associated with any political party and they bring specialist opinions and experiences from various fields in Parliament. Currently, four of the 12 nominated seats in the Rajya Sabha were vacant, which are filled with these new conventions. (input language)
