United Nations: If the huts of Yemen now targeted the ships in the Red Sea, their evening is fixed. The United Nations Security Council has continuously attacked commercial ships in the Red Sea by the Iran-supported Huti rebels of Yemen. In such a situation, the UN has passed a resolution to keep a constant monitoring on these attacks. If the huts now targeted the ships, then there can be strong retaliation on them.
America and Greece proposed
This proposal to monitor Yemen’s huts was jointly presented by the US and Greece, which had 12 votes in favor. Russia, China and Algeria distance from voting. These countries feared violation of Yemen’s sovereignty, which was indirect indication towards airstrikes by the United States on Huti Helpers.
Main point of proposal
Under the proposal, United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Gutaras will have to submit a monthly report on the Huti attacks by January 15, 2026 to the Security Council. Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shia described the proposal as an essential step towards maintaining vigilance against Iran -backed Huti terrorist threat. He recently referred to attacks on two commercial ships MV Magic Ceee and MV Aternity C by the huts, in which both the vessels drowned, many sailors died, and some are still hostage. Shia described these incidents as “terrorist action” and demanded from the Security Council that the Huti attacks should be stopped immediately and the hostages should be released.
Effect on global maritime security
Greece’s United Nations Envoy Avanzelos Cecaris said the Huti attacks have increased mistrust and insecurity in the global sea community. He emphasized that “the international supply chain and the freedom of marine security and shipping are essential for global economic stability.” The huts started these attacks on the Red Sea when the Israeli army began to respond to the attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and started a terrible retaliation in Gaza. After this, the ships in the Red Sea began to be attacked in protest against the Israeli attacks on Gaza, which is considered part of the “Huti campaign”. (AP)
