The Supreme Court has taken a tough stand on the condition of basic facilities like toilet in the courts of the country. On Wednesday, the court expressed displeasure that 20 out of 25 High Courts of the country have not yet told what steps they have taken to improve the toilet.

On 15 January 2025, the Supreme Court directed all the High Courts, State Governments and Union Territories that every court should have separate toilets for men, women, disabled and transgenders. Under Article 21 of the Constitution, every person has been considered as a fundamental right.

Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan have given 8 weeks to all the High Courts to present the report. The Supreme Court has warned that if the report does not come this time, the Registrar General of the High Court will have to appear in the Supreme Court itself.

The case began with a PIL by advocate Rajib Kalita, in which he has raised the issue of poor state of toilet in the courts.

The Supreme Court had said on July 14 that the central and state governments should stop the hate speeches. Also, keep in mind that the freedom of expression of citizens should not be violated. The bench of Justice Biwi Nagaratna and Justice KV Vishwanathan said- people are understanding the freedom to speak hate speech, which is wrong.
The Supreme Court had said on July 14 that without wife’s information, record calls can be used as evidence in marital disputes. The court rejected the Punjab-Haryana High Court’s decision, stating that doing so is a violation of the wife’s right to privacy and cannot be considered as evidence.
