Earthquake: The tremors were felt in the Asian country of Tajikistan on Sunday morning. According to the National Earthquake Science Center (NCS), a 4.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Tajikistan. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 160 km. NCS said in a post on X, “Earthquake intensity: 4.0, time: 20/07/2025 01:01:55 IST, Latitude: 36.87 n, longitude: 72.10 e, depth: 160 km, location: Tajikistan.”

Earlier, Tajikistan had an earthquake of 3.8 magnitude on July 18, which was only 10 km, which made it more sensitive to the afterchox.
On July 12, two earthquake tremors were felt in the region. The National Earthquake Science Center said, “Earthquake intensity: 4.8, time: 12/07/2025 20:46:58 IST, Latitude: 38.86 n, longitude: 70.60 e, depth: 60 km, location: Tajikistan.”
Another post reported, “Earthquake intensity: 4.2, time: 12/07/2025 18:57:26 IST, latitude: 38.18 n, longitude: 74.30 e, depth: 107 km, location: Tajikistan.”
On June 21, there was an earthquake in the region, which was informed by NCS. According to the description, the earthquake came at a depth of 140 km. The NCS said in a post on X, “Earthquake intensity: 4.0, time: 21/06/2025 01:36:29 IST, Latitude: 37.21 n, longitude: 72.10 e, depth: 140 km, location: Tajikistan.”
Tajikistan’s sensitivity
Such shallow earthquakes are more dangerous than deep earthquakes, as the energy close to the Earth’s surface originates more intense, causing sharp vibrations in the ground and more damage to buildings. Conversely, deep earthquakes lose their energy in reaching the surface.
Tajikistan is a mountainous country, whose topography is diverse and is particularly sensitive to climate hazards. It suffers from earthquakes, floods, droughts, avalanche and landslides. The most sensitive areas are river valleys dependent on glaciers that provide hydroelectric and water resources for irrigation, delicate mountain ecosystems and isolated forests with mountainous and river coastal territories, making it sensitive to landslides and land erosion.
