SC took cognizance of student suicide case in Sharda University-IIT Kharagpur

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the case related to suicide by students at Sharda University and IIT Kharagpur. Taking cognizance of the matter, the court made an important comment and said that there is something wrong in the education system. The Supreme Court has sought a report on suicide of students from IIT Kharagpur, Sharda University.
Next hearing on Monday
The next hearing in this case will be held on Monday next week. In this case, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said, “Something is wrong.” Both institutions were asked whether the cases of cases were given to the police on time? The court asked whether an FIR was registered and the police was immediately informed?

What is the case of suicide by students in Sharda University and IIT Kharagpur?
Recent students suicides at Sharda University and IIT Kharagpur have highlighted serious issues related to mental health and pressure in educational institutions. In both cases, the Supreme Court has taken cognizance.
On 18 July 2025, 21 -year -old student of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Jyoti Jhangra, committed suicide by hanging himself in her hostel room at Sharda University, Greater Noida. Jyoti accused two faculty members of mental harassment and insult in her suicide note. It was written in the note that these teachers kept him under stress and insulted him for a long time, due to which he took this step.
On 18 July 2025, 21 -year -old student of Mechanical Engineering, Ritam Mandal, was found hanging in the room of his hostel (Rajendra Prasad Hall) in IIT Kharagpur. It was the fourth suicide at the institute in 2025. Ritam was a resident of Kolkata and enrolled in IIT through JEE Advanced. He was in BTech-MTech dual degree program and was interested in machine learning, data science and stock markets.
