India has imported about 9.74 lakh tonnes of dialys in the quarter of April to June to meet the country’s domestic demand. This information was given by Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizer Anupriya Patel in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. According to PTI news, 2.89 lakh tonnes in April, 2.36 lakh tonnes in May and 4.49 lakh tonnes in June were imported. According to government data, DAP imported in the financial year 2024-25 was 45.69 lakh tonnes, while in 2023-24 it was 55.67 lakh tonnes, 65.83 lakh tonnes in 2022-23, 54.62 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 and 48.82 lakh tonnes in 2020-21.

Demand for fertilizers slightly more than last year

According to the news, Minister of State Anupriya Patel said that the government is ensuring the availability of adequate fertilizer to meet the needs of Kharif 2025. The demand for fertilizers for this time’s kharif season is slightly higher than the previous year, as the sowing sector of crops has increased and the monsoon has been favorable.

Patel said that since April 2010, the Central Government has implemented a nutrient -based subsidy policy for phosphate and potato fertilizers. Under this policy, subsidies are fixed based on the amount of nutrients and these fertilizers come under the open general license, which can import companies according to their business.

Constant supply being ensured

He said that the difference between demand for fertilizer and production in the country is met through imports. Fertilizer companies have made long-term agreements with countries with DAP production to maintain continuous supply for geopolitical reasons.

Fertilizer is also an important part of urea in imports. In the financial year 2024-25, urea imported was 56.47 lakh tonnes, 70.42 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, 75.80 lakh tonnes in 2022-23, 91.36 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 and 98.28 lakh tonnes in 2020-21.
