Talk between Thailand and Cambodia in Malaysia, consent on ceasefire

Thailand and Cambodia Ceasefire: Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Monday that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to ‘immediate and unconditional’ from midnight on Monday midnight. So far at least 35 people have died in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. More than 2,60,000 people have been displaced due to the conflict. Anwar presided over the talks as the head of the ASEAN (organization of South East Asian nations) regional groups. He said that there has been a consensus to take necessary steps to restore normal status on both sides.

The ceasefire will be applicable from midnight of 28 July

Anwar Ibrahim, while reading a joint statement, said that Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Phumtham Vachayachai have agreed to “immediately and unconditional ceasefire” from midnight of 28 July. Hun Manet and Funtham appreciated the results of the meeting and shook hands after the conclusion of a brief press conference.

Struggle started like this

The conflict between the two countries began after five Thai soldiers were injured in an explosion in a tunnel last week on the border of Thailand and Cambodia. US President Donald Trump posted on ‘Truth Social’ on Saturday that he had spoken to the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia and suggested that if the struggle continues, he would not move forward on trade agreements with any country. He later said that both sides had agreed to negotiate the ceasefire.

What is the main dispute of Thailand and Cambodia?

There is a dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over the Hindu temple. The name of this temple is “Preh Vihear Temple”. It is an ancient Shiva temple, built in the 11th century and is considered an excellent example of Khmer architecture. The temple is situated on a hill (Dangrek ranges) on the border, and from here the root of the dispute begins. The temple is geographically located on the border of Thailand and Cambodia. The main entrance of the temple is towards Thailand, but it falls in the geographical range of Cambodia. This is what Cambodia claims.
