Luanda: The 2 -day fierce protests against the increase in diesel prices in Luanda, the capital of Angola, shook the city. According to the police, 4 people lost their lives in this uproar, while more than 500 people have been arrested. The ruckus started on Monday when the recent decision of the government increased the prices of diesel by more than 30 percent. This increase directly affected mini bus taxis, which is the most famous and affordable ride to the common people of Angola. The huge increase in taxi fares provoked the anger of the people, after which hundreds of people took to the streets.

Police take strictness to control the situation

Police spokesperson Maateus de Lemos Rodrigues said on Tuesday that the protesters created a ruckus in the city. Many places were vandalized, shops were looted, vehicles and buses were damaged. Roads were blocked by putting barricades on the roads, causing an atmosphere of chaos in Luanda. The police took strict action to control the situation and detained hundreds of protesters. Police say that peace and peace have now been restored in most parts of the city.

There were strong demonstrations in early July too

This is not the first time that there is a ruckus about fuel prices in Angola. At the beginning of this month, there were demonstrations on the same issue. Human Rights Watch then accused the police that they used excessive strength against peaceful protesters. Allegations of strictness on protests in Angola are not new. The ruling party here, People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) has been in power in 1975 since independence from Portugal since independence.
