Government of Karnataka asked TCS reason for retrenchment of 12,000 employees, called for talks
Karnataka K Labor Minister Santosh Lad said on Thursday that his department has asked Tata Group’s IT company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to give the reason for large -scale sorting. The minister said, “Yesterday we came to know that TCS is going to lay down 12,000 employees. Our department has called TCS officers to find out the reason.” He said that Sunrise Industries has been exempted from labor laws, but some conditions are also attached. Lad said, “We have kept Sunrise Industries out of the purview of labor laws and for the last 5 years we have been giving them a year-away discount, yet some conditions are attached to them.”
A total of 6,13,069 employees were in TCS till June 2025
The ‘Sunrise’ sector means a new or relatively new industry that is growing rapidly and is expected to become an important driver of the economy in future. He said, “If they want to get someone out of the job, then they have to inform us. We are talking to them on this basis.” TCS has recently announced a trimming of about 12,261 employees, ie about two percent of its global workforce, most of which will be of middle and senior class. By the end of June 2025, the number of TCS employees was 6,13,069. In the April-June quarter of the current financial year, the company hired 5000 employees.
KITU lodged a complaint against TCS with Labor Commissioner
The TCS said in a statement that the step is part of the company’s comprehensive strategy to become a ‘future ready -ready organization’, which focuses on investing in technology, AI deplue, market expansion and workforce restructure. The Karnataka State IT/ITES Employees Union (KITU) had strongly objected to a large scale retrenchment and Additional Labor Commissioner G. A complaint was lodged against TCS before Manjunath. In a statement, the union stated that it has demanded legal action against the management for violation of the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, as well as demanding action against the conditions imposed by the Karnataka government regarding reporting of service details.
