Dhaka: There has been a new twist in Bangladesh politics. On 5 August 2024, the student leader who played an important role in getting former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the absence has been arrested in a case. The Bangladesh Police on Friday arrested Alam Apu, a student leader who led the agitation against Hasina. This arrest has taken place at a time when Sheikh Hasina’s government is only 2 days left for one year to fall.
What was the matter?
Bangladesh Police said Alam Apu has been arrested on charges of recovery. Five other colleagues have also been arrested in the same case, including two prominent leaders of the Student Against Description (SAD). However, Alam Apu was arrested about a week after the arrest of these leaders.
(SAD) led the movement against Hasina
(SAD) had led the mass movement last year, which eventually dropped the Awami League government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August from power. Joint Commissioner of Police Mohammad Naseerul Islam said, “Our detective branch has arrested Alam Apu from Vari area of Dhaka. Apu is the sixth accused arrested in this recovery case.” On July 26, five student leaders were arrested by the police, including SAD leaders Abraham Hussain Munna and Abdur Razzaq Riyadh, causing resentment throughout the country. After this arrest, SAD immediately expelled these leaders from the organization and dissolved all its units except the Central Committee. Munna was the city convenor of Dhaka SAD, while Riyadh was the convenor of SAD’s Private Universities Committee.
In which case is the charge of recovery
According to the police, the group reached the house in Gulshan area of Dhaka, the leader of the former MP and now the leader of the Awami League, who was dissolved on 17 July. He demanded 50 lakh Taka from Shammi’s husband Abu Zafar. Shammi was not at home at that time. That day he recovered 10 lakhs of cash. Then on July 26, he reached home again to recover the remaining 40 lakh taka, but this time the police reached the spot on the complaint of the family and arrested them. The police action came to light when the CCTV footage of the accused went viral on social media while taking cash money in the drawing room of the house. (PTI)
