New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of the country D.Y. Chandrachud has vacated the official residence of Delhi -based Chief Justice of India. India’s 50th Chief Justice Chandrachud retired on November 8, 2024. Recently, there was a dispute over the official residence of the Chief Justice of India on 5, Krishna Menon Marg, 5, there was a dispute over their existence. On July 7, Justice Chandrachud had clarified the situation to PTI, saying that the goods had been tied and he would soon go to the government house on rent with his wife and children.
Former Chief Justice was living in the residence of five Krishna Menon Marg
Justice Chandrachud, his wife Kalpana and daughters Priyanka and Mahi were living in the official residence of CJI, five Krishna Menon Marg, New Delhi. Both Priyanka and Mahi are Divyang. Justice Chandrachud had explained in detail the reasons for being in the bungalow for more than the scheduled time, saying, “We have really tied our goods. Our luggage has already been tied. Some goods have already been sent to a new house and some are kept here in the store room.”

He was responding to the letter sent by the Supreme Court administration to the Central Government regarding the alleged stay in the government bungalow for more than the scheduled period. Former Chief Justice expressed grief over the controversy and cited the medical condition of his daughters, who needed a ‘wheelchair’ favorable home.
From whom was the former Chief Justice living in government residence with permission?
Referring to the developments, Justice Chandrachud said that after retirement he spoke to the then Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna, who had become his successor, and told him that he had to return to the bungalow at Tughlaq Road, where he lived before becoming Chief Justice. Justice Khanna, however, asked Justice Chandrachud to stay in the bungalow of Chief Justice of India, as Justice Khanna did not want to live in the official residence. The Supreme Court administration had written a letter to the Center on July 1, stating that Justice Chandrachud had been over the period than the permission in the CJI bungalow and demanded the assets to be evacuated.
