Dhaka: Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country on August 5 last year amid widespread violence and rebellion in Bangladesh. Even though Hasina gave the country, but now even after a year, Bangladesh seems to be politically unstable. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh, the slogans of new Bangladesh were echoing. After the coup of Hasina’s government, it was believed that the new system here would live up to the expectations of the people. The country’s command in the vortex of violence came to the Nobel Prize winner Mohammad Yunus, but the new Bangladesh is not far away, now the old Bangladesh is not the same as during Hasina’s tenure.

‘No such Bangladesh is imagined’

It was a pleasure for most people to leave the post of Hasina amidst violence and rebellion. At such a time, Mohammad Yunus took charge as the head of the interim government and promised to restore the system, hold new elections after reforms. In the absence of Hasina, she is under trial against humanity for crimes. He is currently in exile in India. Despite all this, people now say that the dream of freedom of expression, secularism and democratic tolerance are still incomplete. People are also saying that such Bangladesh was not imagined.

Did Bangladesh get after violence?

Meenakshi Ganguly, director of Asia Affairs of ‘Human Rights Watch’, says that those who took to the streets against Sheikh Hasina’s repressive power a year ago are still incomplete. Hundreds of people have died during the rebellion against Hasina. The protesters set fire to police stations and government buildings. There was also a bloody conflict between political rivals. But, even after all this, the question is the same.

What is going on in Bangladesh?

To form the new Bangladesh, the Yunus government has set up 11 reform commissions, including a National Consent Commission which is working on the election process with major political parties. However, till now the election deadline and process have not been agreed. Attacks on women and minorities have increased. Allegations of arbitrary detention are coming up. In particular, there are allegations of targeting supporters of Sheikh Hasina. Hasina’s party Awami League is banned and more than 24 of her supporters have died in custody in the last one year.

Yunus government has failed

The ‘Human Rights Watch’ said on 30 July that the interim government had failed to fulfill its human rights commitments. He has also complained of harassment of ethnic and religious minorities in some areas. The period of political instability in the country is still going on. The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), headed by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has demanded elections in December or February, while the Yunus government is talking about elections in April. Earlier banned Islamic parties have got an opportunity to emerge under the Yunus government. At the same time, student leaders who led the movement have formed a new political party, which is demanding extensive changes in the Constitution.

Radical forces are threatened for Bangladesh

Parties like Jamaat-e-Islami have organized large rallies, fearing that radical forces may further divide Bangladesh politics. Political analyst Najmul Ahsan Kalimullah said, “The emergence of Islamic forces shows that the roots of fanaticism in Bangladesh can go deep in the future.” He said that the Yunus government hoped people to give priority to the improvement in the election process, but that opportunity seems to be missing. During the protest, people wanted Bangladesh where there are no incidents like law, forcibly disappearance and freedom to speak. However, has such a Bangladesh formed or is moving forward in the way of becoming, the answer is easy.
