New Delhi: Justice Yashwant Verma has suffered a major setback from the Supreme Court. The petition has been dismissed by the Supreme Court. Justice Verma had demanded the report of the inquiry committee to be invalid in the case of getting a burnt cash from his house as a judge of the Delhi High Court. Along with this, Justice Verma also challenged the recommendation sent to the President and PM to remove him from the post of Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna.

What did the apex court say?

The Supreme Court dismissed this petition by Justice Verma. The court said that his petition is not eligible to consider. The Supreme Court considered the internal investigation panel and the process adopted by former CJI Sanjeev Khanna as legal and constitutional. In the last hearing, the Supreme Court had commented that when Justice Verma himself joined the process of the inquiry committee, how can they now question his legitimacy.

In fact, on the night of 14 March 2025, a fire broke out in the store room of the government bungalow of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Verma on Tughlaq Road, Delhi. At that time Justice Verma was out of the city. When the fire brigade and police team reached the spot to extinguish the fire, there was allegedly a pile of notes of 500 rupee notes filled with sacks.

This incident raised questions on Nyapapalika. In view of the seriousness of the case, the then Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna formed a committee of three judges for an internal investigation, taking self -cognizance.

The inquiry committee gave its report that the store room in which the cash was found was controlled by Justice Verma and his family. The committee, in its report, considered not being able to disclose the source of cash as serious misconduct and recommended to start the process of impeachment against Justice Verma.

During the monsoon session, more than 200 MPs of the ruling party and the opposition signed and submitted a proposal of impeachment against Justice Verma to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Meanwhile, Justice Verma filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the validity of the investigation process against him and the report of the committee. But the Supreme Court rejected his petition tax that there was no flaw in the investigation process.
