Two tribal IAS officers have been appointed from the Northeast to the post of Secretary in the Finance Ministry. Both of them are officers of Manipur. One is named Vumlunmung Vulnam who is from the cookie Jomi Hamar community. The other name is K. Moses Chalai who belongs to Mao Naga community. According to the news of Nagaland Post, this is the first time the Central Government has appointed members of the Scheduled Tribes (ST) from the Northeast as Secretary of the Finance Ministry. Let me tell you, sixteen other IAS officers have been appointed to fill the major positions in finance and other ministries including commerce and aviation last week.

Who was given responsibility

According to the news, Vumlunmung Viabonnam, IAS officer of Manipur cadre, 1992 batch, was appointed as the new expenditure secretary, while 1990 batch Manipur cadre officer K.K. Moses Chalai was appointed as Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises under the Ministry of Finance. As you know, the maximum age limit for the Civil Services Examination for General category candidates is 32 years, while the upper age limit for SC and ST has a discount of five years. That is, they can take the examination of civil services by the age of 37 years.

Another officer from Manipur

Apart from these two officials, IAS officer Rajesh Aggarwal, who was appointed as Special Affairs Officer (OSD) in the Ministry of Commerce, is also from Manipur. His name has been in the headlines since the ethnic struggle almost two years ago. According to the news, 1994 batch officer Aggarwal, on September 30, will take over as Commerce Secretary after Sunil Barthwal retires.

Let me tell you, before Moses Chalai, Tangkhul Naga Amising Luikham of Manipur was appointed as the Secretary (Ministry of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises) for more than a year. It was before July 2021 when the initiative was taken to separate public enterprises from heavy industries and create a separate department under the Ministry of Finance.
