New Delhi: Bees, along with other pollinators such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, among others, are crucial parts of our planet. They play a significant role in maintaining greenery and ecological balance on the earth. However, these pollinators are increasingly under threat from several human activities, such as deforestation, pollution, climate change, etc. Thus, it is important to protect bees before they go extinct on the planet. Considering their importance and the need the need to safeguard their home, a special day has been dedicated to these small creatures. Every year, May 20 is observed as World Bee Day. The day is observed with a special theme.

The theme for World Bee Day 2024 will be “Bee engaged with youth.” The theme highlights the important role that youth can play in addressing the various challenges that bees and other pollinators are facing. With this theme, the United Nations is aiming to involve youths in the noble cause of protecting bees and their hives. The events and campaigns organised this year will mostly focus on raising awareness among youth and other stakeholders about the crucial role of bees and other pollinators in ecological balance, agriculture, and biodiversity preservation. The UN believes that involving youths in beekeeping activities, educational initiatives, and advocacy efforts will create a new generation of environmental leaders. Additionally, it will also motivate and empower youths to make a positive impact on the world.
Significance of World Bee Day 2024
The theme also focuses on fostering more diverse agricultural systems and reducing dependency on toxic chemicals. This will not only reduce the impact of chemicals, but will also enhance pollination. This approach will significantly lead to improvements in food quality and quantity, which will benefit both human populations and the ecosystem.
Bees are under threat because of human activities. According to the official website of United Nations, the current extinction rate of bees is 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal. If this rate continues, nutritious crops, such as nuts, fruits, and varieties of vegetable crops will be substituted increasingly by staple crops such as potatoes, corn, rice, eventually resulting in an imbalanced diet. Around 90 per cent of the global flowering plant species depend mostly on animal pollination, along with more than 75 per cent of the world’s food crops and 35 per cent of agricultural land across the globe.
