Inflation: Eating and drinking items became cheaper, retail inflation came to 8 years low

The rate of consumer price index-based inflation declined continuously for the 9th consecutive month in July this year, due to softness in the prices of food items, especially vegetables and pulses. According to data released by the National Statistics Office on Tuesday, the retail inflation rate in this July was 1.55 percent, which is the lowest level since June 2017. Earlier, it was recorded 2.10 percent in June 2025 and 5.42 percent in July 2024.

The rate of food inflation based on the prices of food and drink was minus 1.76 percent, which is the lowest since January 2019. It was minus 1.01 percent in June.

The biggest reason for low inflation rate is a sharp decline in the prices of vegetables and pulses compared to a year ago. Vegetables became 20.69 percent and pulses and their products 13.76 percent cheaper than a year ago. The prices of spices decreased by 3.07 percent and the price of meat and fish by 0.61 percent.

Apart from these, the inflation rate of certain foods was relatively low. These include grains (3.03 percent), eggs (2.26 percent), milk and dairy products (2.74 percent) and sugar and confectionery products (3.28 percent). Fruit prices rose faster in July. Their inflation rate was 14.42 percent. Oil and fatty products became 19.24 percent expensive.

The inflation rate of fuel and electricity class was 2.67 percent. Inflation of the health class was 4.57 percent and the education class was four percent. The Reserve Bank has projected the retail inflation rate of 2.1 percent in the second quarter (July-September) of the current financial year (July-September), in a statement released after a meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee of August.
