Owaisi’s statement on SIR controversy- “Many real voters’ names will be removed from this process”
Asaduddin Owaisi
Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi made a statement on the SIR dispute during a press conference. Owaisi said that he can speak against SIR on behalf of his party. He claimed that the names of many real voters would be removed from this SIR process.
He said that in the interim list released by the Election Commission (EC), it has not been told how many people have signed only the form and have not submitted the necessary documents. Owaisi said that his party has given the names of many such voters to his lawyer Nizam Pasha, whose names are not included in this list.
Supreme Court told SIR ‘voter-friendly’
Explain that the matter related to special intensive revision of voter list in Bihar is under consideration in the Supreme Court. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court defended the SIR process, saying that the number of documents in it has been increased compared to earlier, which makes it a voter-friendly. A bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard the petitions challenging the June 24 decision of the Election Commission (EC) to organize SIR in Bihar. The bench said that the number of documents in the brief revision in Bihar earlier was 7, while in SIR it is 11.
The court said, “The number of documents in the earlier brief revision in the state was 7 and it shows 11 in the SIR, which shows that it is voter-friendly. We understand your arguments that not accepting Aadhaar is exceptional, but a greater number of documents is actually of inclusive form.”
Abhishek Singhvi expressed disagreement
On behalf of the petitioners, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi disagreed on this. He argued that even though the number of documents increased, his coverage is less. Singhvi cited a low number of passport holders in Bihar and said that there is no provision to give permanent resident certificates in the state, which makes it difficult for most people to provide documents.
In response, the bench said that a list of documents is usually prepared only after taking feedback from various government departments to ensure maximum coverage.
This hearing is taking place at a time when protests are going on on the issue of SIR inside and outside Parliament. On August 12, the apex court said that it is under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission to include or excludes citizens or non-citizens in the voter list. The court also supported the Election Commission’s stance to not accept Aadhaar and voter ID card as a decisive proof of citizenship in SIR.
The court also said that this dispute is largely a matter of lack of trust, as the Election Commission has claimed that out of a total of 7.9 crore voters in Bihar, about 6.5 crore people would not need to submit any documents, whose names were in the 2003 voter list. (input language)
