Election Commission’s reply to the mistake in the voter list, said-‘If you raise the issue at the same time …’
The Election Commission has responded to allegations of disturbances in the voter list.
New Delhi: The Election Commission, while answering the opposition’s questions on the issue of mistakes in the voter list, has said that if these issues were raised at the right time, mistakes would have been rectified. The Commission made it clear that the process of preparing the voter list is completely transparent and includes all political parties. The Commission said that the issue of mistakes in the voter list should have been raised when claims and objections were demanded on the draft list.
Voter list preparing process
According to the Election Commission, the process of preparing a voter list for Parliament and Assembly elections in India is divided at many levels. The responsibility of preparing it is given to Electoral Registration Officers (EROS), who are SDM level officers. They are helped by booth level officers (BLOS). These officers take responsibility for the accuracy of the voter list.
Transparency kept full attention
The Commission said that when the draft of the voter list is prepared, its digital and physical copies are given to all political parties. Also, it is also put on the Election Commission website so that anyone can see it. After the draft list arrives, voters and political parties are given a month’s time, in which they can file their complaints or objections.
Final list and appeal process
Even after the final voter list is printed, its copies are given to political parties and uploaded on the website. If someone has any complaint, there is a chance to appeal at two levels for this. The first appeal can be made with the District Magistrate (DM) and the second appeal to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the State or Union Territory.
‘If these issues had been raised at that time …’
The Election Commission said that some political parties and their booth level agents did not investigate the voter list at the right time nor paid attention to the mistakes. The Commission says that if these issues were raised at that time, the concerned officials could have corrected mistakes. Recently some political parties and individuals have raised the issue of mistakes in the old and new voter list. On this, the Commission said that these issues should have been raised when claims and objections were sought on the draft list. If these things were revealed through the right channel at the right time, then the mistakes could have been correct.
‘Tell me if there is any mistake in the voter list’
The Election Commission insisted that complete transparency is taken in preparing the voter list. The Commission has appealed to all political parties and voters to investigate the voter list and tell them if there is any mistake. This can make the voter list more clean, which will help strengthen democracy. The Election Commission made it clear that it is always ready to further improve the voter list. But for this it is necessary that all the parties should fulfill their responsibility at the right time.
