Paris: Diplomatic tension is being deepened between France and Israel on the issue of recognizing Palestine as a nation. French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent remarks, describing it as “disgusting”, “misleading” and “completely unacceptable”.
Netanyahu had made this allegation
The controversy began when Prime Minister Netanyahu alleged in a letter that the anti-Jewish incidents in France have accelerated since France’s announcement of recognizing the nation of Palestinian nation. This letter was sent by Netanyahu to President Macron on Monday, which has been confirmed by ‘Associated Press’. In the letter, Netanyahu wrote, “Your support for Palestine is further provoking this anti-Jewish spirit.”
Macron office gave this answer
In response, the French President’s Office issued a strict statement on Tuesday evening. It said, “Analysis of France being responsible for an increase in anti-Jews violence in Paris over the decision to recognize Palestine in September as a nation in September is misleading, disgusting and completely unacceptable. It will not be ignored. At present, seriousness and responsibility is required, not generalization and arbitrary allegations.”
Macron gave a sign of recognition to Palestine
Significantly, last month, President Macron indicated that France could recognize Palestine as an independent nation during the United Nations General Assembly in September. Since this announcement, tension has been seen in diplomatic relations between Israel and its traditional Western colleagues. However, this attitude of France has received support from many countries. Britain, Canada and Australia have supported Macron’s initiative. Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also dismissed the Netanyahu’s allegation in which he called the recognition of Palestine as “Betrayal with Israel” and described the Australian leadership as “weak”.
How many Jews live in France
Talking about the Jewish community in France, this country is the largest Jewish population of Western Europe, where estimated 5,00,000 Jews live. This is about 1% of the total French population. The issue of recognizing Palestine as a nation is no longer the issue between Izra and Arab countries, but it is also affecting mutual relations between Western democratic countries. The introduction of its position in a clear and strong manner by France shows that the attitude towards Palestine is changing even in European countries. On the other hand, Israel sees it as an emergence of anti-Jewish spirit against them, making this case more sensitive.
