National Award winning science broadcaster Sarika Gharu said that the shining moon on Sharad Purnima will be at a distance of only 3 lakh 57 thousand 364 kilometers from the Earth, which is the shortest distance between the Moon and the Earth for this year. Due to its proximity to the Earth, the Moon will appear relatively larger and brighter. In western countries it has been named Hunter’s Moon.
He told that at 4:56 pm Indian time, the Moon will come to its closest point to the Earth and about an hour later, it will rise in the east as Sharad Supermoon and spread its moonlight in the sky throughout the night. Even though according to religious beliefs, you might have celebrated the festival by eating kheer on Wednesday night itself, but in terms of brightness, scientifically, the moon will shine at its maximum tonight only. If clouds or fog do not become a hindrance, you will also be able to enjoy this brightest night of the year.
What is supermoon?
Science broadcaster Sarika told that the Moon revolving around the Earth does not revolve in a circular path, but revolves in an oval path. Due to this, its distance from the Earth sometimes increases to 406,700 kilometers and sometimes it even comes closer to 356,500 kilometers. When the Moon comes near the Earth and a full moon occurs, the Moon appears about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter. This is called supermoon.
