Valmiki Jayanti- Religious belief

Valmiki Jayanti, celebrated as the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, the author of Ramayana, has its own special significance. According to religious beliefs, this special day is dedicated to the name of Lord Valmiki and after worshiping him, Chaupai from Ramayana is sung.

There is an amazing incident behind Valmiki ji becoming Maharishi (Maharishi Valmiki), which is described and throws light on his life. According to religious beliefs, Valmiki was earlier a dacoit, whose name was Ratnakar. They used to rob people who came to the forest to support their families. During this time, one day Narada Muni also reached the forest. Ratnakar captured him as soon as he saw him.

Narada Muni, who had become Ratnakar’s prisoner, asked him, will your family also become a partner in this sin? Ratnakar reached his home to know the answer to Narad Prabhu’s question where he got the answer as ‘No’. Narada Muni’s question and Ratnakar’s family’s answer completely changed him and he gave up all his evil deeds and became engrossed in penance.

It was during his penance and intense meditation that ants made their home around Ratnakar and he came to be known as ‘Valmiki’ (emerging from the ant’s house). After this, Valmiki composed the great holy book giving divine description of the events of Ramayana. Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated every year remembering the penance, sadhana and sacrifice of Valmiki ji.
